The Socio- Economic Justice Initiative, “MAAN,” identifies itself as an advocate for accountability, as a core practice of citizenship. The initiative strives, through all available means, to encourage individuals to protect and defend their rights using all legal tools at their disposal.
One of the toughest challenges facing the Lebanese communities is the erosion of their identity as unified citizens, transforming them into fragmented and incompatible groups. While these groups are not overtly adversarial, this division appears to stem from the governance system established since the TAEF Agreement 1989, perpetuated through three primary means: security, which revolves around the safety of sects and, by extension, the nation; politics, which ties a community’s standing to the nation’s; and economics, which links a sect’s well-being to the country’s overall stability.
When war erupted on September 27, MAAN sought a role that reflects its identity during this critical and sensitive phase of the Lebanese experience. The decision was made to focus on two seemingly distinct issues that ultimately serve the same strategic objective for MAAN, at the forefront of these approaches is the reinforcement of rights, such as the right to security and the right to equitable access to services.
This platform introduces a specialized complaint system for humanitarian and relief operations related to the war and its consequences. The system aligns with international standards for grievance mechanisms. Through this system, MAAN commits to following up on complaints until satisfactory outcomes are achieved and rights are restored to their owners. Further details can be accessed on the dedicated complaint page.
Additionally, the platform features the Social Cohesion Index, designed to monitor and analyze all indicators related to social cohesion, particularly during wartime. It has already begun, and continues to, observe interactions between internally displaced communities and host communities, whether positive or negative. More details about this effort can be found on the Observatory page.
The most significant aspect of this effort is the ongoing and substantial contribution of activists from all regions of Lebanon in monitoring and supporting the platform’s activities. The entire MAAN family extends heartfelt appreciation to them for their invaluable efforts.
